TTUHSC El Paso Doctor Travels to Poland to Help Burned Ukrainian Children

Updated: Jun 16, 2023

Volunteer doctors are the first American medical team to treat Ukrainian children in Poland since the Russian invasion began.

In May 2023, Shawn Diamond, M.D., assistant professor in the Department of Surgery at TTUHSC El Paso, traveled to Poland with Doctors Collaborating to Help Children, a medical team of 11 U.S. physicians on a mission to care for children from war-torn Ukraine.

Working in collaboration with physicians from Michigan, Massachusetts, Texas and Missouri, he performed free reconstructive surgery for 20 Ukrainian children and young adults whose conditions ranged from congenital deformities to scars, burns and war injuries from bomb blasts and flying debris. The group was the first medical team from the U.S. to treat Ukrainian children since the beginning of the Russian invasion in February 2022.

A hand and microsurgery and plastic surgery specialist, Dr. Diamond’s dedication to healing not only impacts children of our Borderplex region, but extends thousands of miles to vulnerable populations across the world.
